Songbird has finally released a Linux download. It installed easily and then simply ran. I had to add the gstreamer-0.10-ugly package to Ubuntu to get mp3 playback working, but it basically just installed and ran – very nice.

I’ve been looking for a better music player for Ubuntu as while I like Amarok it’s KDE and so requires a huge number of dependancies – something I’m keen to keep to a minimum. So far Songbird looks promising, though better support for podcasts would be nice.

I really dislike iTunes and am ever hopeful that someone will manage to get iPod support working well enough in Linux that I can finally stop using it!
