service

last night a large group of us went out to eat. The group numbered 11 so getting a table was a problem, but eventually an italian restaurant said they could accomodate us, but as two tables. This was fine and the tables were next to each other, so all seemed fine. The service was nowhere near the standard you normally expect in america. At one point I had to go find a waiter as we had been waiting 5 minutes...

bison

After doing some work to make sure that we correctly rebuild when settings are changed, or could have been changed, I decided to try and add another piece of the puzzle that’s missing. Adding it requires making some changes to the flex/bison code I have, but as usual it wasn’t as easy as I thought it might be. I’m sure that there is a simple explanation of what needs doing somewhere, but I keep finding myself...

Customer Service

Over the last year I’ve hired a car several times from Europcar. They have good rates and their cars have always been OK. The thing that makes me keep going back is that they seem to provide good customer service. I was charged for an extra day’s hire as I exceeded 24 hours while waiting in a queue to return the keys 3 months ago, but a single phone call, lasting about 2 minutes and it was corrected!...

Progress

The FreeBSD 6 BETA 2 iso worked a treat and so now FreeBSD 6 is installed on the new machine. After installing cvsup I updated the source tree and rebuilt, then updated the ports and rebuilt those as well. Now I’m just installing gnome from ports. even on this machine (which seems a lot faster than my other machines) it’s taking a while. The ports system works well, but sometimes is annoying. I don’t use any part...

gDesklets

The good news is that the daemon is now nice & stable, with none of the crashing that has afflicted previous installs of gDesklets. The bad news is that they don’t seem to be able to remember where they should be displayed, which is mildly annoying! I’ve looked around the web for help, but none of the suggestions i’ve found work, so I’m not really sure what’s going on now 🙁...

gDesklets

One of the motivations for going with gnome desktop this time was the excellent gDesklets. While they can be made to work under KDE it wasn’t pretty and so eventually I stopped using them. Being “native” to gnome they have none of those issues, so I installed them this afternoon. The results are mixed as the ports for FreeBSD aren’t great. In fact the initial attempt resulted in a non functioning gDesklets app, so I binned it and...

Shanghai

Been in Shanghai for a few days now and starting to get more used to it. There seems to be a peretual haze (smog?) over the city and visibility has been very poor the whole time. It gets better at night and the views are better, but still noweher near as good as I’d imagined it would be from the pictures you see in the advertising. It’s a real contrast to Beijing. A much more modern city with...
