Erasing data

As part of my cleanup of the “office” I’ve decided it’s finally time to do something about all these hard drives I have lying around. They need to go. Before that though, they need to be wiped. Totally.

I’ve seen a few program that seem to do the job, and even some that are free, so I’ll probably set up one of the comp’s I’ve just removed from the office and start erasing over the next few days (work permitting). Before I launch into it though, anyone done this before or have reccomendations for apps to use?

What kind of hard drives and what is wrong with them?

(I wrote a little program which filled up my old harddrive with a 1k file continuously.)

I recommend a screwdriver and a hammer. Works every time.

I’m pretty sure this is what I used last time I was retiring a machine. It’s boot floppy with that drops you into a tool that will invite you to really really whip that the nearby disks. Slow, so it must be good.
